NEET UG – 2024 Results Declared! Shocking Marks vs Ranks!!

On 4th June Evening, NTA has declared the NEET UG 2024 Results. The press release can be accessed at NEET (UG) – 2024 Results Press Release

We have a mind boggling 67 students who got 720/720! YES 67 Students!!! on AIR 1.

If you see my post on AIIMS Cutoffs, AIIMS – MBBS Admissions 2023-24 : Cut Off Ranks & Marks, you will realize that this year even if one has scored 720/720, they may not secure an admission into AIIMS Delhi!! A rude shock to so many students and parents.

A quick comparison of this years Marks vs Ranks Data (approximate ranks only as NTA did not release marks data) with last 4 years is presented in the table below, based on the data I have collected in the last 12 hours or so from my mentees and some coaching institutes. I am still collecting the data and I will come back with a more accurate and complete  Marks vs Ranks data shortly.

Needless to say, the cutoffs for Admissions in various colleges is going to increase drastically. Last year (2023) Medical Admission Cutoffs data summary is available in my posts:

MBBS Admissions 2023-24 : Top 30 Colleges (AIQ) Cut Off Ranks & Marks

Telangana Medical College MBBS Admissions – 2023: Cutoff Ranks & Marks

Karnataka Medical College MBBS Admissions – 2023: Cutoff Ranks & Marks

Maharashtra Govt. Medical College MBBS Admissions – 2023: Cutoff Ranks & Marks

The competition for medical studies in India is increasing year after year and the preparation strategy has to alter accordingly.

Karnataka Medical College MBBS Admissions – 2023: Cutoff Ranks & Marks

Like in all other states, in Karnataka too the MBBS admissions for the academic year 2023-24 are underway. The second round allotment list was made available on 6th Sep. The same can be accessed from this link –> UGNEET 2023 – Second Round Seat Allotment. It is nice to see that the annual course fees data for each college, has also been provided in this document.

One must remember that there are 93 Medical Colleges across the state of Karnataka, both Government and Private included, that participate in the common counselling process. In addition there are a few autonomous private colleges who have their own admission process.

I have picked up some 20 Government colleges across the state and 4 Private colleges in Bangalore, to study the opening and closing ranks for general category this year. I checked the marks scored in NEET 2023 for the closing ranks as well. The same has been summarized in the table below. Also, the closing ranks for the previous 2 years is also compiled into the table below.

The closing ranks data for all 3 years pertain to the end of Round 2 allotments. One can clearly see the increasing cutoffs, signaling the increasing competition and potentially brighter students as years are passing by.

The data in the table below has been sorted on the 2023 Closing ranks.

NEET 2023 - Karnataka - OR CR - GMC-01

Dear Medical aspirants from Karnataka of 2024 and 2025, do check these cutoffs and create your study strategy based on a target college you want to get admitted to.

Best Wishes to all of you

NEET 2024 – Marks Vs Ranks Initial Data!! NEET UG – 2024 Results Declared! Shocking Marks vs Ranks!!

*****************************

Check my latest post: –> AIIMS – MBBS Admissions 2023-24 : Cut Off Ranks & Marks

*****************************

NTA has declared the NEET UG 2023 results and by now everyone has seen the “Rank Inflation” (term borrowed from the social media)! As mentioned in an earlier post, this is primarily due to the effect of 1 Bonus Question and for 2 Questions multiple options have been considered as correct. Bonus question marks have been given to all the candidates. But, for the 2 Questions where multiple options are correct, marks are given to only those candidates who have marked either of the correct options. Other who have marked the wrong options, or who have not answered did not get the marks. Due to this, the marks have been increased anywhere between 4 and 15, for all candidates. This has created the skew in the Rank vs Marks trend (“Rank Inflation”) this year as compared to the previous years.

IITs conducting the JEE Advanced exam do come out with a very comprehensive report every year, in which all the Rank vs Marks data is also given. NTA does not come out with such a report. They just do a small press release. So to collect the Ranks and corresponding marks, one has to depend on the coaching institutes data, data in print, electronic and social media. It may take a couple of weeks to get very accurate data. However, I wanted to publish a first draft of the data that I have collected so far.

Essentially as an input for all the 2024, 2025 aspirants whom I am mentoring so that they can fine tune their study strategy. Away from the skew in the data that got created because of the Bonus marks, one can still see the fierce competition for the medical admissions.

I can only imagine the hard work that these aspirants are putting in to get the near perfect scores not only in Biology but also in Chemistry and Physics. I will not be surprised if some of these top rankers would have done some 8 to 10 rounds of revision and 100+ mock tests during their preparations in the last 2+ years. Along with AIIMS Delhi, the top medical colleges in the country would be out of reach if one does not do such preparation.

In the last 24 hours, I had to answer questions like, “Is this a healthy competition”?, “Why such pressure on students”?, “Why such an easy paper”?, “Why can’t the paper be a little more difficult”?, etc. I may have to write a series of posts altogether just to answer these questions, based on the discussions I do with students and parents.

The key input I give to the students and parents in my one-one discussions is, Set a realistic college target first based on the past year cutoffs, which gives them a range of marks target and one which they feel can be achieved based on their capability. Over the years, I have only seen these students outperforming their own targets and without all the pressure that is out there.

Coming back to the Rank vs Marks data of NEET 2023, the table below shows the last 4 years trend of Rank vs Marks. (Table updated on 3rd July 2023)

NEET 2023 Last 4 Years - Rank vs Marks

When I was collating the data for the above table, I realised that one has to consider the Marks vs Rank data as well. On the same mark, there is a huge bunching of candidates and due to the tie breaking rules of NTA, the ranks could be different. The table below shows the last 4 years trend of Marks vs Rank.

NEET 2023 Last 4 Years - Marks vs Rank

I tried to collect the last rank data on a specific mark. In the 2020, 21, 22 data there can be a +10 addition to the rank at some marks.

The 2023 data in both the above tables would be updated, once the state wise rank lists get released in the next 3 to 4 weeks.

For the benefit of the 2023 candidates who are looking for the colleges cutoff data, please refer to my following posts where the cutoffs data is available.

NEET UG – 2023 Results Declared!

On 13th June late night, NTA has declared the NEET UG 2023 Results. The press release can be accessed at NEET (UG) – 2023 Results Press Release

As mentioned in my post NEET UG – 2023: An Unexpected Marks Vs Ranks in Store; the unexpected did happen!!

We have 2 students who got 720/720! 4 students from Tamilnadu in the Top 10 Ranks, including the AIR 1! Great to see this performance from Tamilnadu students, in the midst of all noise around NEET in that state.

At 700 marks, the rank in 2022 was around 100. Now, in 2023 at 700 Marks the rank is around 325+.

At 650 marks, the rank in 2022 was around 4,670. Now, in 2023 at 650 marks, the rank is around 7,275+.

I will come back with a complete  Marks vs Ranks data shortly.

Needless to say, the cutoffs for Admissions in various colleges is going to increase drastically. The competition for medical studies in India is increasing year after year and the preparation strategy has to alter accordingly.

NEET UG – 2023: An Unexpected Marks Vs Ranks in Store

In my post NEET 2023 Exam – Biology Section – Mapping to NCERT Textbooks , based on the unofficial Answer Keys from Coaching Institutes, I mentioned that 720/720 may not happen this year.

Now with the official answer key from NTA (NEET UG 2023 PROVISIONAL ANSWER KEY – DATE OF EXAM – 07.05.2023 )announcing 1 BONUS question for everyone and 2 questions with two options as correct, the scenario of Marks vs Ranks is going to totally change.

There would certainly be at least one 720/720 score, if not more. Also, ranks for 700 marks and above itself are going to go through the roof. It seems that the overall Marks vs Ranks trend would beat the previous 4 years trend.

With the results round the corner, one may want to quickly check the last 4 years Marks vs Ranks trend, which can be seen in my post NEET 2022 Marks Vs Rank & Inputs for NEET 2023, 2024 Preparation Strategy.

BEST WISHES to all NEET UG 2023 Aspirants for your Results!

NEET 2023 Exam – Biology Section – Mapping to NCERT Textbooks

Dear Aspirants of NEET 2024, NEET 2025

NEET 2023 Examination was completed on 7th May 2023.

The official question papers and answer keys are yet to be released. However, most of the coaching institutes have already released the question papers and their version of the answer keys.

The paper is on the difficult side as compared to last 2 years. However, for the bright and smart students the paper would be on the easier side! Last year we did not have a 720/720. The same may happen this year too. However, the ranks at the 700 Marks, 650 Marks and 600 Marks would more or less remain the same.

When students start preparing for the NEET Examination after their Class X , Year after Year, there is a major perception that gets created by the coaching institutes that NCERT books would not be important! {I started noticing that the leading coaching institutes are slowly changing their stance towards the NCERT books. Better late than never!}

Year after Year (Seventh consecutive year now), I come out with my blog posts to showcase how important the NCERT Biology textbooks are, by mapping the NEET Question papers Biology Section questions to NCERT Biology textbooks. For all those who are preparing for the NEET 2024, 2025 examination and beyond, I have come back with the Biology question paper mapping to the NCERT Biology textbooks.

Before going to the 2023 question paper mapping, let me point out to all of you about the mapping exercise that I had done for the 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017 Biology Section of the Question Paper, which can be accessed from the following posts.

******************************************************

NEET 2022 Exam – Biology Section – Mapping to NCERT Textbooks

NEET 2021 Exam – Biology Section – Mapping to NCERT Textbooks

******************************************************

Now coming back to the 2023 Question paper mapping.  I have taken the Code F6 question paper to do the mapping exercise. {Credit and Thanks to Allen Career Institute for this question paper} The Question Paper can be accessed from the following link:

NEET-UG-2023-Biology-paper-with-answers

Unlike last few years, This year 100 out of the 100 questions of the Biology section are traced and found in the NCERT textbooks. 90 questions need to be answered out of 100. So the 360/360 scores in Biology are going to increase.

The mapping of the questions to the NCERT textbooks is shown in the tables below. (Not being a Biology student, E & OE)

NEET 2023 - Code F6 - Biology 1 of 2

NEET 2023 - Code F6 - Biology 2 of 2

So Dear Aspirants please ensure that the NCERT Biology text books of classes XI and XII and Exemplar books are your true companion in your pursuit of NEET Examination Success!

If all 90 questions can be answered by just reading the NCERT books, one should start thinking as to why Lakhs of Rupees need to be spent on Coaching Classes, Extra Tuitions, Ed-Tech Platforms, Apps, etc. etc.!!

Best Wishes to all of you

NEET UG 2023, 2024, 2025: Telangana State MBBS Aspirants – Inputs for your Study Strategy

Dear NEET UG Aspirants of 2023, 2024, 2025 from Telangana,

At the Outset, Best Wishes to all the students who are preparing for the NEET – UG Exam of 2023, 2024, 2025!!

All the students who are aspiring to become Doctors in Telangana are in for a Bonanza. Medical Education and Healthcare Infrastructure in Telangana is undergoing a Historic Transformation, unlike in any other state of the Country.
This year, with the launch of 8 new Government Medical Colleges the total Government colleges count in the state of Telangana has reached to 18. Another 17 Government Medical Colleges are in the planning stage and should start within the next 2 to 3 years. The total MBBS seats in the state would then reach to 10,000. Hopefully at that stage, all students in Telangana who want to pursue MBBS do not have to migrate to foreign countries (War torn and Covid torn!!) or to other states as well.
The Key Inputs required, for all of you, in the pursuit of an MBBS seat in a good Government College in Telangana are the following:

  1. Syllabus for NEET UG Examination
  2. Resources required for Preparation
  3. Cutoff Ranks and Marks for Admissions in the top Government Colleges (plus some private colleges) in Telangana
  4. Telangana State Ranks in NEET over the years

The Inputs that I have shared with few aspirants in my seminars and One-One sessions in the last few months, are summarized here for the benefit of anyone who are seeking these inputs.

1. Syllabus for NEET UG Examination

Syllabus for the NEET UG Examination is pretty much the same over so many years now. One can get the syllabus from the Information Brochure available from NTA website (NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY CUM ENTRANCE TEST (UG)) or the direct link of Information Bulletin given herewith. Information Bulletin NEET(UG) – 2022
A quick summary of the syllabus subject wise is given below:

NEET - Biology Syllabus

NEET - Physics Syllabus

NEET - Chemistry Syllabus

2. Resources required for Preparation

I have put out a post earlier on the books that are required for preparation. The link of the post is given here. Books for NEET UG Medical Entrance Exam in India
For both Biology and Chemistry, the key resources are NCERT Textbooks and Exemplar Books. For any serious aspirant, these are a first and a must resource.
Over the years I have written blogposts, showing how more than 90% of the questions in the NEET Exam can be traced back to the NCERT Textbooks, especially for Biology and Chemistry. As far as Physics is concerned, while NCERT books are the starting point, one needs a higher-level/advanced book as well for preparations. The blogpost mentioned above suggests few such advanced books.
A sample of my posts mapping NEET questions (Biology and Chemistry) to the NCERT Textbooks, can be accessed from the links given below.
NEET 2022 Exam – Biology Section – Mapping to NCERT Textbooks
NEET 2021 Exam – Biology Section – Mapping to NCERT Textbooks
NEET 2020 Exam – Chemistry Section: Mapping to NCERT Textbooks
For those who are studying in the Telangana State Board colleges, The Intermediate books of First and Second year are the primary source for preparations. These books have been upgraded to be brought in line with the NCERT textbooks. A very small gap still remains. Hopefully, in the next revision the Intermediate books would be totally in line with the NCERT textbooks. So for now, please do have the NCERT textbooks also alongside for completeness in your preparations.

3. Cutoff Ranks and Marks for Admissions in the top Government Colleges in Telangana

One needs to set a Target College to get a seat in, and for that one needs to know what rank and marks would be required to score. Without a Goal or a Target, it is difficult to strategize your preparations.
If the target college is AIIMS Delhi, any other AIIMS, or any National college under the All-India Quota, then please refer my earlier blogpost which gives the cutoffs for these colleges. AIIMS + Top 35 UG Medical Colleges – MBBS Admissions 2022-23: Cut Off Ranks & Marks
If the target college is any Government College in Hyderabad or anywhere in Telangana, then the table below shows the Opening and Closing ranks for MBBS admissions in 2021 and 2022. Counselling for 2022 is still underway. The ranks shown below for 2022 are at the end of round 2 counselling. The ranks are the All India Ranks in NEET.

4. Telangana State Ranks in NEET over the years

NEET has become the single exam across all states and all colleges for Medical Admissions. NEET – The Only MBBS Entrance Examination Across India from 2020 Onwards!
So from 2020 onwards, the nature of competition for this exam has totally changed. Also, keeping the exam rooted in NCERT books meant scoring 720 on 720 a distinct possibility.
Telangana State ranks from 2019 to 2022 are summarized in the table given below. {One point that puzzled me when I compiled this data is pertaining to the Coaching Institutes Frenzy in Telangana, especially in Hyderabad. While one sees the so called Big Name of coaching for Medical aspirants in every nook and corner of especially Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Medchal – Malkajigiri, Medak, … and with some Big Brand Ambassadors (Film and Sports) promoting this coaching institute, the Results are not so Big?!
At All India level in the Top 15,000 Ranks

  • Telangana students bagged a mere 300 Ranks.
  • Students from Rajasthan (KOTA being the Coaching Capital of the Country) bagged some 2300 Ranks
  • Students from Uttar Pradesh bagged 1850 Ranks
  • Students from Maharashtra bagged 900 Ranks, and
  • Students from Kerala (with not so many big names in coaching around) bagged 600 Ranks!!

So, Dear Parents of Medical aspirants in Telangana be Aware of the Coaching Standards in the state! in the middle of all Hype that gets created.

In Summary, the simple steps for preparations are:

  • Set a Target College
